If you have spent a summer or more in Dubai, you know that the dust here is not like anywhere else. It finds its way into window tracks, settles on ceiling fans after a few days, and even lands on surfaces you cleaned yesterday. So we receive one question frequently from tenants, villa owners, and families: how often should residents of Dubai deep-clean their homes?
We would have to say it depends, but we have an answer of sorts after years of seeing apartments from Marina to JVC to Mirdif and more.
The climate is a large factor, and larger than most people think. There is the heat, the humidity that spikes during certain months, and then there are the fine sand particles that are in the air. Your home is fighting a losing battle after you stop cleaning regularly.
Most homes have their air conditioning units on almost year-round. This means, for the most part, your AC is drawing air in from the outside and whatever else is floating along with it. Dust settles in the most impossible places to think of, like behind wardrobes, on top of kitchen cabinets, and even on light fixtures.
Then there is living in Dubai. Daily tidying is usually expected among families in Dubai. Daily tidying, unlike deep cleaning, only provides surface-level cleanliness. Daily tidying fails to scrub grout lines, flip mattresses, or descale shower heads.
Most options in Dubai for an apartment or villa require a deep cleaning every four to six weeks in order to be kept fresh without the deep cleaning task becoming an all-day chore.
However, there is no such thing as a universal answer for these options. Several different factors can shift the timeline, including:
● Households with pets: dander and odors can build up quicker; for a realistic estimate, a deep clean every three to four weeks.
● Households near construction sites: in Dubai, that is, most of the options. A deep clean may be necessary due to dust getting in on a monthly basis.
● Single professionals living alone can often stretch deep cleans to six to eight weeks. ● Families with small kids: an added chaos, meaning the deep clean interval is reasonable every month.
One of our clients in Business Bay last year had an apartment that always felt dusty and believed a deep clean needed to happen every week. The cause turned out to be sand blowing into her apartment due to an unsealed balcony door. After fixing the seal and deep cleaning the apartment, the dust complaints stopped.
Regular cleaning and deep cleaning are often confused as the same thing, and for good reason, the difference can be difficult to pinpoint. Here is how we categorize the two.
Of all the cleaning spaces, this one is the most important. Because of how the kitchen is used, cleaning can bake food and grease into the interior.
This includes washing:
● The exhaust hood and filters
● The inside of the oven and the oven door
● The kettle and coffee machine that are descaled
● Cabinets, both the insides and exteriors
The surfaces and the spaces behind and beneath the appliances
This is recommended for daily cooks every two to three weeks, once a month for less frequent cooks.
Hard water also affects this room. The deposits of mineral buildups on the faucets and glass are harder to remove the longer they sit.
Deep cleaning bathrooms every month usually entails:
● Descaling tiles, taps, and shower screens
● Scrubbing grout lines (for this task, grout lines are scrubbed best by a toothbrush and a proper solution)
● Cleaning exhaust fans, as they accumulate dust and inhibit good ventilation ● Sanitizing drains, as this eliminates odor buildup, is most beneficial in the humid months.
These areas may feel clean on the surface, and may even be clean on the surface, again, on the support structures. As an example, every few months, vacuum and flip the mattress. Dust mites and skin cells will fill the mattress, even if the sheets are changed weekly.
For deep cleaning bedrooms and living areas monthly, you should include: ● Vacuuming under beds, sofas, and all furniture
● Cleaning ceiling fans and light fixtures
● Dusting skirting boards, window sills,s and door trim/frame
● Washing curtains or vacuuming blinds
Dusty air makes windows in Dubai look truly dirty in only two weeks after cleaning. Balcony windows facing the main road, or windows near dust-causing construction, will accumulate particulates even faster.
Most homes need windows and balconies cleaned deeply (i.e., dusted, silted, sanded, scratched, etc.) every 2-4 weeks, and after a sandstorm.
Cleaning in the summer in Dubai has its obstacles. AC has to work hard in the summer and needs its filters monitored biweekly. Clogs likely will occur. The condensation builds humidity and can promote mold in the corners of the bathroom and under the sink if left untreated.
Winter leads to dry outdoor air with more dust. Wind can lead to more dirt outside. During the winter, extra cleaning focus is needed in entryways and on balconies.
The weeks leading up to Eid and Ramadan are definitely peak booking times. Many families want their homes to be clean for hosting, and it is actually a great opportunity to deep-clean your home once a year.
Sometimes a scheduled clean won’t matter because your home is sending you an overdue sign. Here are some of those signs:
● Your home has a musty smell.
● Cleaning dust only last a day.
● Your grout has turned dark or grey because of too much mopping. ● AC has a dusty smell.
● Kitchen cabinets have a sticky residue.
If you have two or more of these symptoms, don’t wait for your deep clean.
We won’t say hiring professionals is always necessary. Plenty of people know how to do an excellent job getting their homes clean. What we will say is there’s a lot of people who want to clean their home deeply but simply aren’t able to.
The bad reputation for hiring professionals is, a lot of the time, for the wrong reasons. People are just busy. Work, kids to take care of, and countless other responsibilities give people in modern cities very little to no time to clean, even the basics, to the level that they want to.
Professional cleaning teams offer tools that a lot of times are unavailable to the most experienced DIY cleaners. Steam cleaners, specialized degreasers, and the knowledge of how to properly clean a surface without ruining it are all vital to the trade. Countless expensive cleaning mistakes come from using the wrong cleaning solution on everyday surfaces.
From experience, we know that tackling a single room is the most important tip we can offer if you’re doing the cleaning on your own. A beautifully clean kitchen has far more value than a just ok clean home.
This is a good example of a schedule that works regularly.
Weekly: Wipe down bathroom, clean kitchen surfaces, vacuum high traffic areas Every 2 to 3 Weeks: Wipe down fridge, clean windows, check and replace AC filters if needed
Monthly: Deep clean kitchen and bathroom, dust, vacuum, and clean under the bed Every 3 to 6 Months: Clean curtains, upholstery, and dust all corners and clean behind all appliances
If you have a traditional full-time job, consider hiring a professional to do a deep clean for 4 to 6 weeks for you to do light cleaning in between to keep your home clean and livable without ruining your weekend.
For households that want consistent results without the scheduling back and forth, having a dependable Dubai cleaning service do your cleaning regularly tends to be the most stress-free option.
For the most part, once every 4 to 6 weeks is ideal to deep clean, assuming all the light cleaning and tidying have been taken care of. If you have pets or live near a construction area, this should be adjusted to once every 4 weeks.
Yes. This surprises people. Daily cleaning ends up cleaning most surfaces and visible mess. However, daily cleaning misses scrubbing grout, cleaning AC vents, oven interiors, and dusting behind furniture.
The best time is just before the peak of summer. Cleaning the dust and preparing the AC for the peak summer heat can also be scheduled near the start of major holidays like Eid.
Standard 2 bedroom apartments can take professional teams about 4-6 hours, depending on the apartment condition and how much of a detailed clean the residents require.
Yes! Deep cleans can help with common allergy triggers like dust mites, dander, and mold, which settle in carpets, along with many other furnishings and even the curtains and in the AC.
No, but many people prefer to stay home the first time a cleaning is scheduled to help guide the team on what areas of the space that they are most concerned with.
There are several signs that AC vent cleaning is long overdue. Dusty or musty smells when the AC turns on, and noticeably dusty vent covers are also signs.
Yes, because most landlords expect a nearly perfect home return, and in most cases, a deep clean is the difference in receiving a full security deposit.
